Hello World!
In the past three years, we’ve witnessed a social shift reminiscent of the 1960s. Combine this with a generational changing of the guard, remote work, and a new call to action fueled by the three words that seemed to emerge out of collective frustration (diversity, equity, and inclusion), and we have a potent recipe for change. Inclusivity, leadership, and organizational growth have always mattered, but now we face a distinct call to action.
Welcome to a blog that will pave the way for change and inspire a fresh, nontraditional approach to DEI, leadership, and organizational development. Get ready to explore innovative perspectives and strategies that will shape the future of these domains. Join me on this transformative journey.
Who am I?
In a world of subject matter experts, I consider myself a lifelong student in the fields of DEI, leadership, and organizational development. My leadership experience has taught me many lessons. Like other leaders (who will admit it), sometimes I got it right, and other times, not so much. My deep-rooted passion lies in cultivating inclusive environments where individuals can flourish, innovation can thrive, and organizations can reach new heights of success. Just like you, I’ve explored countless leadership theories and devoured more leadership books than I care to admit. But here’s the deal: in our discussions, we’ll keep things practical.
My intention is to equip you with practical takeaways you can immediately put into practice, regardless of whether you’re working remotely or in a traditional office setting. Leading and inspiring teams, whether you’re new to management or an experienced leader, demands a delicate balance of innovation, measurable metrics, and genuine and consistent care for people.
Together, we’ll focus on strategies that apply to you, your team, and your organization. While theories have their value, I’ve discovered that most managers crave actionable insights they can apply in the real world. So, let’s dive in and explore these transformative insights together.
Embracing Diversity and Inclusion
I make an effort to steer clear of clichés, but let’s face it, there are moments in life that demand our immediate attention. Right now, my friends is one of those moments—a time to seize the opportunity, to strike while the iron is hot, to grab that proverbial bull by the horns. We’re talking about the world of DEI, where transformation awaits those brave enough to embrace it. So, let’s gather our courage, step up to the plate, and make a meaningful impact together.
Companies all over America are establishing senior-level DEI positions. While some have successfully instigated transformative cultural shifts, others have encountered frustration when their efforts lost momentum due to insufficient buy-in and support from decision-makers.
Let’s have a real talk about the incredible importance of embracing diversity. We’ve seen research that demonstrates diverse teams are more innovative and have higher financial performance. So, let’s not underestimate the power of diversity and all that it entails. Together, we will explore the richness found in all its forms. We will uncover the transformative power of fostering inclusivity, creating spaces where unique perspectives, talents, and backgrounds intersect, and ultimately nurturing innovation, productivity, and the well-being of all employees. DEI is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges we face, and part of that challenge lies in how we talk about it. But don’t worry, we’re diving into that too. Let’s navigate the complexities of these conversations together and explore how we can engage in dialogue that fosters understanding, empathy, and growth.
No matter your industry, we could all stand to ask ourselves some tough questions. Are we truly moving the DEI dial? Are our core values aligned with diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging? Do our organizational practices actively promote DEI? Are we willing to confront our biases (because we all have them) and understand how they influence our initiatives, customer interactions, vendor choices, hiring processes, workplace culture, and community involvement?
Let’s face it, times are changing. Only 53 companies have remained on the Fortune 500 list since its inception in 1955. That’s right, over 89 percent of the companies that made the Fortune 500 list in 1955 have either faced bankruptcy, merged with, or were acquired by different firms, and a few still exist but no longer hold their coveted spots among the top 500 companies. Change is inevitable, my friends.
The way we conduct business is undergoing a profound transformation, thanks to the influence of social media, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and remote work. These forces are changing the way we operate.
Then there’s the all-important topic of generational diversity. With four generations – Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z – working together, change will only happen when we blend the wisdom of the past with the innovation of the future. How do companies navigate a 40-year age gap in their workforce? The answers to this question will vary widely depending on who you ask, but I believe it’s about honoring the experiences of those who came before us while embracing the disruptive energy of those who are propelling us forward, even if it’s with a few kicks and screams along the way.
Leadership that Inspires Change
Effective leadership serves as a catalyst for positive transformation. In collaboration, we’ll explore the qualities and practices that empower leaders to champion diversity, cultivate inclusive cultures, and foster authentic connections. Topics such as empathetic leadership, allyship, unconscious bias, and the pivotal role leaders play in shaping equitable and inclusive workplaces will absolutely be a focal point.
Leading people can be an arduous journey. We often promote individuals based on their exceptional performance, subject matter expertise, or reliability, only to realize that leadership demands an entirely new set of skills. It’s an intriguing dynamic, isn’t it? We elevate people who may not have the natural inclination or desire to develop others. But isn’t that the essence of leadership? To unlock potential, empower, inspire, and foster growth?
Let’s pause and reflect. We invest significant resources in training individuals to excel in their roles, and just as they reach their peak, we promote them, pay them a little more money, provide a pep talk, and entrust them with a team, often with minimal guidance. Worse yet, we promote them because nobody else applied for the job. You may have heard that people quit their supervisors before they leave their jobs. Could this be the reason?
In this blog, we’ll examine how we approach leadership development. We must invest in equipping our leaders with the tools and skills they need to nurture their teams, to create environments where individuals can thrive and grow. Let’s reevaluate our approach and ensure that our leaders are set up for success.
